Sisters are doing it for themselves in this big-hearted anthem to freedom and heritage. The tropes and trials of the Old West are given fresh currency when seen through the eyes of African-American women, fleeing racism and the wreckage of Reconstruction. They find big sky and bigger dreams on the prairie, but all they’ve won hangs in the balance as a scoundrel schemes and bullets fly.

Come prepared with a short monologue (need not be from the play), of about 1-2 minutes. Amateur actors welcome.

John Patrick Shanley’s play takes two nuns, a priest, and the mother of one pupil into enticingly tense vignettes. Staged with economy, the implications of simple conversations hint at larger issues and ask questions that may not have convenient answers. Performances are from September 19 to October 11.
